Slight wear at the extremities, the spine chipped head and tail, but the publisher's name still largely legible at the tail, free endpapers irregularly discoloured, last 3 leaves torn along the bottom margin, no loss of text.
A very good copy. First edition of Thoreau's first book. Thoreau published at his own expense an edition of 1, copies: less than sold, and in the remainder was returned to him - bound up and in sheets - prompting his rueful journal entry: "I have now a library of nearly volumes, over of which I wrote myself. The advert leaf advises that "Will soon be published, Walden or Life in the Woods ", but due to the commercial failure of his first work it was not until that the latter was finally published by Ticknor and Fields. Housed in a custom brown cloth box, spine lettered in gilt a little rubbed. Spine ends lightly chipped with sympathetic cloth strips for reinforcement, else unrestored; some very light rubbing to cloth, a few minor fox marks but generally clean internally. A very nice copy in the original cloth. Wood-engraved title-page vignette of Thoreau's hut, chart of Walden Pond with the publisher's imprint - later state but no priority of issue , and 8-page publisher's catalogue dated May bound between the rear endpapers.
First edition. Following the failure of his first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, Walden was not a runaway success. The edition of 2, took five years to sell through, but it was from the very first an immensely influential text, and remains so today: "For almost a hundred years an inspiration to nature lovers, to philosophers, to sociologists and to persons who love to read the English language written with clarity" Grolier.
This copy has the advertisements dated May - the earliest state of the advertisements is April , but as the book was not published until 12 July there is no priority of issue. Other advertisements go as late as September ; although BAL states that they are of "no known bibliographical significance" the pre-publication advertisements are obviously preferable.
Provenance: from the library of J. Roy W. Barrette, with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Also with the contemporary ownership signature of one A. Pugh to the front free endpaper. Boards lightly rubbed at extremities, spine faded. A superb copy, the binding tight and the cloth fresh. One of copies published on May 28, with the list of Thoreau's books priced and no edition statement on the copyright page. The cloth is a variant not listed in BAL. The record of this trip, entitled "Ktaadn", was first published in The Union magazine in , and became the first chapter of the present volume. The second chapter, "Chesuncook", relates a trip to Maine in and the final chapter, previously unpublished, describes a journey along the Allegash river. A beautiful copy, Thoreau's books are rarely found in such excellent condition.

An excellent copy. First edition in binding variant A with Thoreau named as the author of Walden on the spine, and cloth type Z, one of several binding styles used on the first edition without precedence. Cape Cod, a collection of ten essays on the scenery and people of the region, was based on three trips that Thoreau made between and A lovely copy, Thoreau's books are rarely found in such nice condition.
