We analyse conflicts from the national to the international level, across the dimensions of politics, economics, environmental resources, ethnicity, religion, and culture. Given the unprecedented population growth across Asia, policies that will ensure healthy, sustainable and equitable societies are a particular focus.

To explore our history of research and impact in these areas look at our latest annual report or for the long-term view our celebration of our first 20 years of Asia Research Centre achievements. Our current research is clustered into four major areas of challenge and change in the contemporary Asian region:. As countries transform, pressures mount to reassess the rules and institutions that underpin their economic, political, social and cultural governance.

Find out more about policy development and governance reform. Societies, economies and cultures are a product of their historical legacies. We examine unresolved historical claims and past trans-regional connections, as they colour modern international relationships and can have major geopolitical consequences. Find out how historical legacies colour current relationships.

Natural resources are critical to the current Asian economic powerhouse, but the environmental impacts of development have social and political consequences. We explore how political-economic conflict over natural resources is reshaping resource governance systems in Asia. Find out about the impact of natural resource conflicts. The livelihoods, rights, choices and opportunities of individuals are shaped by issues of environment, health, food, migration, and political and ethnic violence.

We question how security priorities are determined, how new modes of security governance emerge, and their implications for social and political rights, poverty, and environmental degradation. Find out more about security issues. This is a free seminar.

The book, which was published in February, provides a platform for Muslim women — I was a contributor — to speak rather than being spoken for by pundits and news reporters, our neighbours and those who are certain of our stories. Muslim women have worked hard to be heard on a wider stage but often it is only in select echo chambers that such voices have been properly listened to. This is not to say that Muslim women are not celebrated.

They are creating visibility and space for themselves — not just fighting for acknowledgement, but building their own stages and hiring their own mics to affirm themselves and their peers. The Salafi ulama are also fervent enemies of the Shiite community in Malaysia. They have gone out of their way to portray the Shiites not only as deviant but a group that seeks the destruction of Islam and the Muslim community. It is clear that there has been a conservative turn in Malaysia.

Nonetheless, there are voices within Malaysia that are now opposed to this conservatism. As long as Islam is politicised and puritan understanding of the religion is promoted, Malaysia will see the radicalisation of more Muslims in the country. Malaysia is a failed state and the sooner Malaysians come to reality the better. The Government itself repeatedly breaks the Malaysian Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement of which it does not understand at all. This absurd and dangerous view will never change, and there are even quite a few non-UMNO Malays who believe it as well.

Anwar remains an albatross around the neck of PKR and likes it that way, being entirely egocentric.

The Hijab: representation among the Muslim women in Malaysia

Lim still insists Malaysia can be multicultural, leading a party that has been unsuccessful in attracting Malay votes; it is still seen as an opposition Chinese partie with some anti-UMNO Indians. Malaysia in in free-fall and 25 elitist self-aggrandizing individuals cannot save the nation. With the BN Govt, the police and the judiciary ignoring the Law, with no one accountable for anything, it seems the downward slide is inevitable and unstoppable. It will probably all end in a big bang, like the rise of ISIS type.

After reading his comments, please revisit your notion that Malaysia is not yet a failed state. Thank you. Unfortunately in Malaysia it has become a race as to who is a so-called better Muslim. Sometimes this could take the form of who wears TRUE Muslim robes or who wears the proper Muslim head coverings and longest beards etc.. As the competitions drag on, the antics is upped graduating from just being a Sunni to Salafism and to I am sure finally Wahhabism.

On the way they condemn everyone else Sufis ,Shias, Ahmadis, Christians etc. They do not seem to condemn the corrupt officials in Government and elsewhere.
